Get More Bang For Your Buck: Tips to Maximise Points on your Family Vacations

Many travellers have hotel points that they’ve earned from business trips, credit card purchases, leisure travel — or a combination of all three. Redeeming these points towards a family vacation can be a rewarding treat the whole family can enjoy. Take the kids exploring new destinations, providing them with enriching experiences and fond family memories — all without breaking the bank.

If you’re not sure whether you have sufficient hotel points for that dream vacation, consider these four ways to get more bang for your buck:

1. Look for Reduced Point Awards

Shoppers know to always look for a sale to get the best deal. Just as your favourite stores will discount items from time to time, some hotel rewards programmes will offer room specials for reduced points or bonus points packages, such as the IHG Rewards Club Bonus Points Package that allows IHG Rewards Club members to earn up to 5,000 bonus points on their stay upon booking the Package. By earning points faster, you are just a few steps nearer to your next free night at an IHG property.

2. Combine Cash and Points

It can be quite a challenge to earn enough points for your entire family vacation, especially if you need more than one room or are staying for a longer duration. However, many hotel loyalty programmes allow you to combine your points with cash to redeem for a variety of rewards, including stays at any property with no blackout dates. Not only will this cost less than paying out of pocket for your entire stay, you’ll still earn points from the nights for which you paid cash.

For example, with IHG® Rewards Points & Cash program you can save 5,000 points on a reward night by paying $40, or reduce the price by 10,000 points by paying $70. This means that you can still take advantage of your points and pay a minimum amount to stay at that dream location.

When nights are paid with both cash and points, be sure to inform the reception desk that your entire stay is booked on two separate reservations at check in.

3. Book Direct

It’s a question many vacationers and holidaymakers ask themselves when they are planning for a holiday: Should I book directly through a hotel or through an online travel agency? To reward customer loyalty, most hotels offer a book direct programme that offers perks and value incentives. IHG Book Direct offers the lowest online rates when you book direct and members earn points that go towards free nights.

4. Earn on Business, Use on Leisure

To make the most of your overseas work stints, book your business stays with a hotel that has an established loyalty programme where you can accumulate points and redeem them for an enjoyable family vacation. Maximise your returns for every hotel booking by booking directly via the hotel website to be entitled to earning points in the hotel’s loyalty programme.

5. Look for Family-Friendly Properties

When you are traveling with your family, you’ll certainly have different needs than you would on a business trip. To make the most of your hotel points on your next family vacation, look specifically for hotels with kid-friendly policies. At Holiday Inn, children aged 12 and under always stay and eat free.

Better yet, you can seek out properties that have children’s amenities, dedicated suites for kids or special interconnecting family rooms, and redeem them with your accumulated points for a more memorable family vacation. For example, Holiday Inn Resort Bali Benoa offers a Kid’s Adventure Suite that features a separate kid’s room with its own television and PlayStation 4 gaming console. Other dedicated kid-friendly play zones within the resort include an outdoor kids pool and a Kids Club activity centre featuring a ball pit, climbing wall and a roster of activities to keep kids entertained all day.
